Portillo heads to the Texas Class 4A UIL meet in Austin on Thursday, May 14, riding high after a dominant performance at the Region I-4A championships. There, he cleared a school-record 15 feet to claim the regional title—a mark that not only etched his name in Clint history but also set the stage for a shot at the state's top prize.

Pole vaulting is a sport of precision and nerve—planting the pole, driving upward, and clearing the bar in a single fluid motion. For Portillo, it's also personal. Growing up, he measured himself against his father's achievements, using them as a benchmark for his own progress. Now, he's surpassing those early goals and aiming for the highest bar of all.

Under the guidance of coach Rosvel Martinez, Portillo has refined his technique and built the mental toughness needed to compete at the state level. His recent practices at Clint High School show a focused athlete, from stretching and carrying his pole to adjusting the bar height with his coach.
