Get ready to see the world from a whole new perspective! The Annual Tree Climbing Championship is taking over Sioux City this weekend, bringing together elite climbers from across the Midwest for an adrenaline-filled competition. Participants can test their skills in any of five events, showcasing strength, agility, and precision high above the ground.
For competitors like Cameron Hughes, this isn't just a weekend hobby—it's a passion that demands serious dedication. "I’ll just go to a park like this, and I’ll start setting up in a tree and be in it for hours at a time. Any given day," says Hughes, a competitor from the Quad Cities. His hard work has paid off, earning him multiple first-place finishes in similar events. Hughes even took his talents global last October, competing internationally in New Zealand. "I’m hoping to get that international spot again," he adds, eyes set on another world stage appearance.
While seasoned climbers like Hughes chase glory, newcomers are also stepping up to the challenge. Issaac Sandridge traveled all the way from Kansas City, Missouri, for his first-ever championship. "I was selected just based off of my climbing experience and my climbing capabilities and abilities," Sandridge explains. But even in the heat of competition, he emphasizes what truly matters: "Make sure that we practice safety every day, because safety is a big thing here. That’s something that we apply on a daily basis."
Hosted by the Iowa Arborist Association, the championship promises two days of high-stakes action. The main events take place tomorrow, leading up to the finals on Sunday. Whether you're a climbing enthusiast or just looking for an exciting outdoor event, this is your chance to witness athletes reach new heights—literally. So grab your gear, head to Sioux City, and see who will conquer the canopy!
