Clemson football's recruiting struggles continued on Tuesday as the Tigers missed out on a key offensive line target in the 2027 cycle. Four-star offensive tackle Elijah Hutcheson announced his commitment to Florida, marking another victory for the Gators in the battle for top trench talent. The 6-foot-6, 275-pound Roanoke, Virginia native chose Florida over Clemson, Vanderbilt, and Virginia Tech.
Hutcheson had been scheduled to visit Clemson later this month for the Tigers' major official visit weekend on May 29-31, but those plans are now off the table. He had been on Clemson's radar for some time, working out at camp last summer and returning for the season opener against LSU. He also made another trip to campus for the Elite Retreat in March after receiving an offer from offensive line coach Matt Luke in January.
After spending last season at Rabun Gap in Georgia, Hutcheson is back in Virginia at North Cross for his senior year. According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, he is the No. 85 overall player in the 2027 class and the No. 7 offensive tackle nationally. This loss adds to a growing trend of Clemson falling short against Florida in recruiting battles—earlier in the cycle, four-star Peyton Miller also chose the Gators over Clemson and Texas.
Despite this setback, Clemson still has several offensive line targets high on their board, including four-stars Carter Jones, Nate Carson, and Reed Ramsier. The Tigers have also extended an offer to three-star tackle JJ Brown in recent weeks, keeping their hopes alive for bolstering the trenches in future classes.
