JJ Bleday is finally living up to the hype—and he's doing it in a Reds uniform.
The Cincinnati Reds outfielder is in the midst of a breakout season that has fans buzzing. Drafted fourth overall by the Miami Marlins in 2019 out of Vanderbilt, Bleday arrived with sky-high expectations after a stellar college career. At Vanderbilt, he was a force, hitting .326 with an OPS over 1.000 across three seasons. But the transition to the pros was rocky.
Bleday made his MLB debut with the Marlins in 2022, appearing in 65 games and hitting just .167 in 238 plate appearances. Never known as a standout defender, his value was supposed to come from his bat. But through his first four big-league seasons, he posted a .702 OPS over 404 games and more than 1,500 plate appearances—good for a below-average 97 OPS+. For a former top-five pick, it was a frustrating stretch.
Now, something has clicked. In just 16 games with the Reds after a trade, Bleday is hitting .321 with a staggering 1.210 OPS. On Thursday against the Washington Nationals, he launched two home runs, collected three hits, and drove in six runs as part of a 15-run outburst.
"We are capable of playing some really good baseball," Bleday said after the game. "We have to go out there and get it. Good things are going to come our way because we have a lot of talent."
With eight home runs in just 17 games as a Red, Bleday is sending a clear message: he's finally putting it all together at the highest level. While the sample size is small, Cincinnati fans are hopeful this is the breakout they've been waiting for—and for the Reds, it couldn't have come at a better time.
