DAX HILL WANTS TO STAY PUT—AND THE BENGALS SHOULD LISTEN

For a player who has bounced around the secondary like a pinball, Dax Hill is finally ready to plant his flag. The Cincinnati Bengals' versatile defensive back has shifted positions three times in just four NFL seasons—from free safety to nickel back to outside corner—but he's making one thing crystal clear as the team hits the practice field this spring: he wants to stay on the outside.

"I feel like staying at one spot is ideal for development—and my mental health," Hill said with a wry smile after Tuesday's workout, drawing laughter from reporters who've heard this storyline before.

Hill's journey through the Bengals' secondary has been anything but smooth. He entered the league as a safety, shifted to nickel in 2024, and was forced to move again when injuries decimated the cornerback room. Just as he was finding his rhythm on the outside, an ACL tear cut his season short after only four games. But when he returned in 2025, Hill proved he could be a lockdown presence on the boundary, earning his stripes as one of the team's most consistent corners.

Now, with the Bengals drafting lengthy cornerback Tacario Davis in the third round, the question mark over Hill's role has returned. The team re-signed Jalen Davis and added Ja'Sir Taylor in free agency, creating a logjam that could push Hill back inside if Davis is ready to start. "I want to be outside," Hill reiterated. "I know what I want, and I want to do what's best for the team."

That balancing act—personal preference versus team need—has defined Hill's career. He admitted the constant shuffling was tough at first, but now he's "kind of used to it." Still, there's a sense of urgency. Both Hill and fellow corner DJ Turner are entering the final year of their contracts, and it's unlikely the Bengals will extend both. Hill, playing on his fifth-year option, confirmed his agent has had preliminary talks about an extension, but there's "not too much" happening yet.

For now, Hill is waiting. "It's what, three weeks into it now?" he said. "We'll wait and see what that looks like."

One thing is certain: after years of being the secondary's Swiss Army knife, Hill knows his best football comes when he's locked in on the outside. And for a Bengals team looking to shore up its defense, keeping him there might be the smartest play of all.
