Dax Hill has been a moving target in the Cincinnati Bengals' secondary—literally. In just four NFL seasons, he's shifted positions three times, always ready to do "whatever is best for the team." But heading into 2026, the versatile defensive back is making his preference clear: he wants to stay on the outside.

Hill started his career at free safety, then moved to nickel in 2024 before injuries at cornerback forced another change. He was showing real promise on the outside before an ACL tear sidelined him for the final 12 games. Last season, he proved to be one of the team's most consistent outside corners. Now, with Cincinnati drafting lengthy corner Tacario Davis in the third round, Hill's role is once again up for debate.

"I want to be outside," Hill said during offseason workouts. "I feel like staying at one spot is ideal for development—and my mental health." The last line drew laughs from reporters, but Hill's message was serious. He's been through the position carousel before, answering the same questions for three straight offseasons since it became clear safety wasn't working out in 2023.

The Bengals have added depth by re-signing Jalen Davis and bringing in Ja'Sir Taylor via free agency. If Davis is ready to start, Cincinnati's best way to get all three top corners on the field might be moving Hill back inside. Hill admitted the constant shuffling was tough at first, but now he's "kind of used to it." Still, he added, "I kind of know what I want, and I want to do what's best for the team."

Hill hasn't spoken with the coaching staff about his position yet, noting it's only three weeks into workouts. "We'll wait and see what that looks like," he said.

There's also a longer-term picture. Both Hill and DJ Turner are entering the final year of their contracts, and it's unlikely the Bengals will extend both. Hill, playing on his fifth-year option, confirmed his agent has had talks about the future but said there isn't "too much" discussion about an extension. As someone who has always put the team first, Hill feels more confident now about voicing his preferences—though he stopped short of saying he'll have that conversation with coaches.

"I've had small conversations with my position coach throughout the year," Hill said. "Certain things I was doing, if I wanted a blitz for a certain game—something like that."

For Bengals fans and fantasy football enthusiasts alike, Hill's versatility is both a strength and a puzzle. Whether he stays on the outside or slides back inside, one thing is clear: he's ready to compete, no matter where he lines up.
