When your franchise quarterback shows up early and ready to work, the message is clear—and for the Cincinnati Bengals, Joe Burrow is setting the tone for a new generation of talent.
Burrow joined his veteran teammates on the field Tuesday, May 12, for conditioning drills during the Bengals' offseason workouts, while first- and second-year players focused on football-specific activities. But what the seventh-year signal-caller demonstrated to the rookies went far beyond his throwing session with receivers at the end of practice.
The Bengals kicked off Phase 2 of their offseason program Monday, and it's no coincidence that as the rookie class arrived, so did many of the team's established stars. While the full squad will come together next week, the newcomers are getting a gradual introduction—and a front-row seat to how the pros prepare.
"I think just the overall experience we have, particularly on that side of the ball, of people in the system here at receiver, at quarterback, is good for young guys," Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said Tuesday. "It's fun getting them out there, not only in the rookie minicamp, within this week, where things are a little bit slower. They get a chance just to see how we practice for four days, see how we coach, hear the verbiage of our terminology, get lined up in motion. So, it's really been a good introduction for all of those younger guys."
With seven draft picks and 10 college free agents joining the roster, Taylor is watching closely to see which rookies absorb the small details that separate NFL success from struggle.
"I think, as simple as it is, it's just who's in the locker room in the morning more than five minutes before the meeting starts," Taylor explained. "We've got a really great group of guys right now that I'm seeing that from some of the young players. You look at the guys who have played seven to 10 years in the league, they're usually here about an hour before we get started—whether it's prehab, whether it's eating breakfast. There's that calmness before I actually have to do something, so you feel less rushed and more prepared."
As for Burrow, Taylor confirmed the quarterback returned in "great shape, ready to go" with a mindset focused on a standout season. The coaching staff is using the offseason program to refine and expand the system, but the real lesson for the rookies might be the simplest one: show up early, work hard, and follow the leader.
