The Miami Marlins are finding their groove again, and Christopher Morel is leading the charge. With a clutch go-ahead single in the eighth inning on Sunday, Morel propelled the Marlins to a 5-2 victory over the Washington Nationals, snapping a rough patch and giving the team its second straight win after dropping five of their previous six.
The game was a nail-biter until the late innings. Morel’s one-out line drive to center field off Nationals reliever Gus Varland (0-1) broke a 2-2 tie and ignited a two-run rally. The Marlins then executed a daring double steal—their second of the inning—to put runners in scoring position. Heriberto Hernández followed with a two-run single, scoring Morel and Jakob Marsee. Marsee, who was part of both double steals, now has 12 stolen bases on the season, tied for fifth in the majors.
On the mound, the Marlins got a solid performance from starter Sandy Alcantara, who allowed two runs and five hits over six innings. Brady House put the Nationals on the board with a run-scoring groundout in the fourth, and Luis García Jr. added an RBI double in the fifth. But Miami’s bullpen shut the door from there. Calvin Faucher (4-2) tossed two scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one walk and no hits. Andrew Nardi got the first two outs of the ninth before rookie Josh Ekness closed it out for his first career save.
The Marlins struck first in the third inning. Liam Hicks drove in a run with a single, and Xavier Edwards later scored on a fielding error by Nationals shortstop Nasim Nuñez off Otto Lopez’s fielder’s choice. Washington starter Cade Cavalli battled through 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs and four hits while striking out four—but he also hit three batters, including two in a row in the sixth.
For the Marlins, this win is a much-needed boost as they look to build momentum. And for fans, it’s a reminder that every game can turn on a single swing—or a perfectly timed steal.
