Christian Lundgaard finally got his IndyCar redemption—and it was three years in the making. The Arrow McLaren driver snapped a 47-race winless streak with a stunning victory at Saturday’s Sonsio Grand Prix on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, and the sense of relief was unmistakable.

While Lundgaard’s first career win came back in 2023 on the Streets of Toronto with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, this one felt different. It was his first win since joining Arrow McLaren ahead of the 2025 season, and it came after eight podiums—including four runner-up finishes—in his first 22 races with the team. That’s a lot of close calls, and finally, the breakthrough arrived.

The defining moment came on Lap 68 of 85, when Lundgaard pulled off a breathtaking outside pass on Team Penske’s David Malukas in Turn 4. It was the kind of move that lifts an invisible weight off a driver’s shoulders. And there was extra meaning in the location: the 14-turn, 2.439-mile road course where Lundgaard first burst onto the IndyCar scene in a one-off debut with RLL back in 2021.

“Yeah, I think, first of all, it’s a lot of unfinished business for me around here,” said the 24-year-old Dane. “Obviously being competitive here pretty much every year except last year, and I really wanted to get some redemption for that. We worked hard to try to figure out where we really went wrong last year. I think we obviously did, but I mean, it just feels awesome. I hope that it doesn’t take another three years for another one, right?”

Arrow McLaren Team Principal Tony Kanaan didn’t let that thought linger. Sitting in the IMS press room, he quickly shot back: “It won’t.”

For a driver who has consistently been a force on road and street courses, it was surprising that Lundgaard didn’t wake up expecting a win—even after qualifying fourth and making his first Fast Six appearance of the season. “It really wasn’t what I expected waking up this morning,” he admitted, after leading 20 laps on the day.

The victory didn’t come without drama. Lundgaard revealed the team had to call an audible after a chaotic opening lap incident in Turn 1, which saw his teammate Pato O’Ward—who started second—hit and spun after contact with Meyer Shank Racing’s Felix Rosenqvist. But Lundgaard kept his cool, threaded the needle, and drove his way to a long-awaited win.

For fans who love a good comeback story, this one checks every box: patience, perseverance, and a pass for the ages. It’s the kind of moment that makes you want to gear up in your favorite team colors and celebrate the thrill of racing.
