Chargers defensive coordinator Chris O’Leary delivered glowing remarks about first-round draft pick Akheem Mesidor.

The Los Angeles Chargers have a new defensive weapon in town, and defensive coordinator Chris O'Leary can't stop singing his praises. First-round draft pick Akheem Mesidor is turning heads before even stepping onto the field for a regular-season snap, and for good reason.

O'Leary didn't hold back when describing the rookie edge rusher's approach to the game. "Mature, professional, technician on the field," he said. "When you listen to him talk about pass rush, you can tell he loves the game, you can tell he's got a high football IQ, you can tell he's really into building his craft and treating his pass rush like a craft."

Selected No. 22 overall out of Miami, the 25-year-old Mesidor joins an already formidable Chargers edge rusher group that features stars like Khalil Mack and Tuli Tuipulotu. But O'Leary believes Mesidor's mental readiness sets him apart from typical rookies. "I see a guy that is going to walk in here, compete with everybody and is already at a place mentally where he approaches the game as a pro," O'Leary added.

What makes Mesidor so special? O'Leary broke it down in detail, highlighting the rookie's technical prowess. "His pass rush technique. You talk about how he uses his hands, the leverage he plays with, how he attacks different tackles in different ways, his timing, his get-off, how he can move into the interior in his pass rush." The defensive coordinator summed it up simply: "an exceptional pass rusher."

Mesidor's college stats back up the hype. In his standout 2025 final season at Miami, he recorded 12.5 sacks across 15 games, along with 71 total pressures. According to Pro Football Focus, he posted a 21.3% pass-rush win rate (94th percentile) and a 16.0% pressure rate—numbers that scream NFL-ready.

Expect Mesidor to make an immediate impact as a rotational player in his rookie season. He projects as the primary third edge rusher behind Mack and Tuipulotu, with the versatility to kick inside on passing downs. His relentless motor, polished hand usage, and diverse pass-rush moves make him a mismatch weapon from day one.

O'Leary summed up the Chargers' defensive philosophy perfectly: "Get as many pass rushers on the field as we can." With Mesidor in the mix, that plan just got a whole lot more exciting for Los Angeles fans.
