In a nail-biting showdown that will go down in snooker history, China's Wu Yize captured his first World Snooker Championship title with a stunning 18-17 victory over Shaun Murphy at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield on Monday. The final, which went to a deciding frame for the first time since Peter Ebdon's epic win over Stephen Hendry in 2002, had fans on the edge of their seats until the very last shot.

At just 22 years old, Wu becomes the second Chinese player to claim the world title, following in the footsteps of Zhao Xintong, who made history last year as the first Asian champion. But Wu's achievement is even more remarkable—he is now the second youngest player ever to lift the trophy at the Crucible, behind only the legendary Stephen Hendry, who was 21 when he won in 1990.

The young star showed nerves of steel in a tense final-frame shootout, sealing his dramatic triumph with composure beyond his years. "I have been trying to go for this for ages," Wu said after the match. "For the past few months, I have been living the same life. I'm so happy that I could play well today."

The emotional victory was made even more special by the presence of his parents, who wiped away tears of joy before joining him for the trophy presentation. "My parents are the true champions," Wu said, his voice filled with gratitude. "Since I made the decision to drop out of school, my dad has been by my side. My mum has also been going through a lot over the years. They are the source of my strength. I love them so much."

When asked how he planned to celebrate, Wu's answer was refreshingly humble: "I just want to have a good sleep. I have been feeling nerves all the time since before the match, so now I just want to go to bed!"

The final was a true test of endurance and skill. Wu led 10-7 after Sunday's play and extended his advantage to 13-12 following the first session on Monday. But Murphy, a former champion who has now lost four World Championship finals since his 2005 triumph, refused to go down without a fight. The Englishman pushed Wu to the limit, leveling at 16-16 with a gritty century break that showcased his trademark resilience.

Wu responded brilliantly, recovering from 45-0 down to produce a stunning 91 clearance and go 17-16 ahead. With the title in his sights, he moved 43-0 up, but a missed black gave Murphy a lifeline. The 41-year-old seized the opportunity, drawing level again with a 75 break. In the final frame, however, the balance of power tipped Wu's way, and he held his nerve to complete his historic victory.

Murphy, gracious in defeat, paid tribute to his young opponent. "I hate being right, but we had a great game in China earlier this season," he said. "I came out afterwards and said he would be world champion one day. It's just a real shame that it was today. But I couldn't have given it any more. I played the best shots I could. I just didn't get my chance."

For Wu Yize, this victory is not just a personal triumph—it's a milestone for Chinese snooker and a testament to the power of dedication and family support. As the snooker world looks ahead to next season, one thing is clear: a new star has arrived, and he's here to stay.
