The biggest storyline? Mahomes is recovering from a late-season ACL injury, leaving his availability for the start of the 2026 campaign uncertain. To bolster the quarterback room, the Chiefs signed veteran Justin Fields this offseason, and he's expected to step in as the starter if Mahomes isn't cleared in time.

Behind Fields, the depth chart is taking shape. On Monday, the Chiefs announced a flurry of moves, including waiving quarterback Jake Haener, along with defensive end Ethan Hurkett and defensive tackle Zacch Pickens. To fill those roster spots, the team signed free agents wide receiver Xavier Loyd, defensive back Marlen Sewell, and offensive tackle Kahlil Benson. These moves highlight the front office's focus on adding depth and competition across the board.

Fields, who joined the Chiefs with a clear understanding of his role, has already made an impression. "I wanted to come here because of the culture, because of Pat and to learn from him and Coach [Andy] Reid," Fields said after signing, via ESPN. "Just the winning, to be honest." He's been eager to soak up knowledge from Mahomes, adding, "I'm already kind of picking his brain a little bit and just observing how he goes about things in the meeting rooms, field and stuff like that. I'm excited to work with Coach Reid and [offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy] and all the guys on offense."

Fields knows he's not the long-term answer in Kansas City, but that hasn't dampened his approach. "Regardless of me starting or being a backup, I'm going to attack each day the same way," he said. "My goal is to get better, any way I can. My mindset doesn't change." As the Chiefs gear up for the 2026 season, all eyes will be on Mahomes' recovery and how Fields handles the reins in the meantime.
