The Kansas City Chiefs are in desperate need of a wide receiver upgrade after a disastrous 2025 season that left Patrick Mahomes stranded without reliable targets. According to ESPN's Aaron Schatz, the Chiefs' receiving corps posted some of the worst grades in the league, and the numbers are alarming.

"Rashee Rice, who is widely considered one of the top slot receivers in the NFL, managed just a 49 out of 100 on ESPN's receiver scores," Schatz wrote. "Tyquan Thornton scored a 36, and Xavier Worthy was even worse at only 25." These rankings highlight a unit that simply couldn't get the job done for their star quarterback.

The Chiefs' struggles at wide receiver were compounded by offseason departures. Hollywood Brown signed with the Philadelphia Eagles, and JuJu Smith-Schuster remains a free agent with no indication he'll return to Kansas City. Despite these losses, the team has done little to address the position this offseason.

Behind the top three returning receivers, the depth chart is thin. Jalen Royals, a 2025 fourth-round pick, managed just two catches for four yards as a rookie. The Chiefs also have return specialist Nikko Remigio and fifth-round rookie Cyrus Allen. It's a group that desperately needs a veteran presence.

Fortunately for Kansas City, the free agent market still offers several proven playmakers. Jauan Jennings, Stefon Diggs, and Deebo Samuel are all available, and the Chiefs have plenty to offer—a Super Bowl contender with a clear path to playing time and the chance to catch passes from one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history.

With Mahomes under center and championship aspirations on the line, signing a veteran wide receiver isn't just a good idea—it's a necessity. The Chiefs need to act fast before another team snatches up the talent that could turn their offense back into a juggernaut.
