The Chiefs selected Emmett Johnson in the fifth round of the NFL draft. What is his realistic 2026 fantasy outlook, and how might his presence impact Kenneth Walker, Emari Demercado, and Brashard Smith?

Last season, the seemingly post-dynasty Chiefs had the fewest 20+ yard rushing plays in the league. The combination of Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt was barely adequate. Clyde Edwards-Helaire quietly played out his contract from the sidelines. Not surprisingly, all three are gone.

The rookie Johnson joins a newly constituted backfield with one holdover (Smith). Underrated journeyman Demercado frequently electrifies when given the opportunity; his 6.5 yards per carry on 126 career attempts is simply incredible, and his pass-catching chops make him a fascinating backup.

Walker, of course, is the big prize. The Super Bowl MVP and three-down starter is primed for a sizable workload—as long as there are no lingering effects from his career-high 326 touches last season. The addition of Demercado and Johnson doesn’t change the fact that Walker’s job is secure. The only question is whether the team will turn him loose during the regular season.

Smith has the lowest ceiling of the group and is essentially undraftable, even in very deep leagues and Best Ball. When Kansas City drafted another running back, Smith’s already flailing value took a bigger hit.

The most interesting fantasy battle on this team is between Johnson and Demercado. The latter probably has the inside track to start the summer. The rookie has more upside if he can win the handcuff role. If a manager with a deep bench takes a flyer on one, they should strongly consider adding the other as a hedge.
