The journey from undrafted free agent to an NFL roster spot is one of the toughest challenges in football. Unfortunately for former Iowa Hawkeyes defensive end Ethan Hurkett, that harsh reality just hit home.
After going undrafted in the 2026 NFL Draft, Hurkett quickly signed with the Kansas City Chiefs as a priority free agent. But his time with the reigning AFC powerhouse was brief—the Chiefs announced Monday that Hurkett was among several players waived as the team reshapes its roster ahead of rookie minicamps.
Hurkett's release is a tough break for a player who proved himself as a disruptive force for the Hawkeyes. After limited playing time in his first two seasons, he emerged as a key part of Iowa's defensive line rotation in 2023. Over his career, the 6-foot-4, 255-pound edge rusher racked up 163 total tackles, 15.5 sacks, and four forced fumbles—impressive numbers for a program known for producing NFL-ready defenders.
Despite that production, Hurkett went undrafted. Now, he'll hit the open market again, hoping another team gives him a shot during the upcoming rookie minicamp circuit. With his experience in Iowa's pro-style system under head coach Kirk Ferentz and his proven ability to get after the quarterback, it wouldn't be surprising to see him land on his feet quickly.
For now, Hurkett's NFL dream remains alive—but the clock is ticking.
