As the NFL gears up for the release of the 2026 schedule in just a few weeks, all eyes are on Kansas City—and more specifically, on the health of superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Could his recovery timeline reshape the entire season's prime-time lineup?
According to Mike North, the NFL's Vice President of Broadcast Planning and Scheduling, the league is carefully monitoring Mahomes' progress. Speaking on the It's Always Game Day in Buffalo podcast, North explained that Mahomes' availability could influence when—and how often—the Chiefs appear in marquee matchups. "He's one of the biggest stars in the league," North said. "None of us would feel great if we had him in prime time early in the season and he missed the first four weeks."
North raised a key question: Would the league risk a blockbuster Chiefs-Bills showdown in Week 1 without Mahomes under center? "That's a fair question. I'm not sure it does 30 or 35 million viewers in Week 1 without Patrick Mahomes," he added. "There's certainly some thought to maximizing that quarterback and this rivalry."
Mahomes has already turned heads by returning to the field for throwing drills—just over 100 days after undergoing surgery to repair his ACL and LCL last December. His determination to be ready for Week 1 is clear, but his progress through training camp will be the deciding factor.
For fans and fantasy owners alike, the ripple effects are significant. A healthy Mahomes means the Chiefs remain a top-tier contender and a ratings magnet. But if the reigning face of the league needs more time, the NFL may adjust its schedule to protect its biggest draw—and that could mean fewer prime-time slots for Kansas City early in the season.
As training camp approaches, keep an eye on Arrowhead. The health of one player could rewrite the entire 2026 calendar.
