The Kansas City Chiefs never doubted Travis Kelce would return for another season—and according to General Manager Brett Veach, they knew almost immediately after their final game.
While fans and analysts spent the early offseason guessing whether the star tight end would hang up his cleats, the Chiefs front office was quietly confident. Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, Veach revealed that Kelce made his intentions clear right after the team's disappointing season ended with a loss in Las Vegas.
"We played our last game of the season in Vegas last year, and when we got back we have player meetings and exit interviews," Veach explained. "Trav came in and basically said, 'I'm going to take a few weeks off here, but I'm not going out like this. Let's stay in touch and let's figure something out.'"
The uncertainty around Kelce's future was understandable. The Chiefs endured a tough campaign, highlighted by quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffering a severe knee injury. For a player like Kelce—who has built his legacy on chemistry with Mahomes—the thought of stepping away after such a season seemed unlikely to those closest to him.
Early rumors suggested the Chiefs might explore free agency for Kelce's replacement, but those whispers quickly faded. The team was content to let the speculation simmer, which is standard practice in the NFL. As Veach noted, information about star players is often treated like "military secrets."
"While free agency and there was still some questions in the air on whether or not he'd return, we knew basically the day after our last game," Veach added. "He made it known to Coach Reid and to me that there was no way he was going out like this."
Veach didn't go so far as to call this season Kelce's "last dance," but he did emphasize the tight end's commitment to being there for Mahomes as the quarterback continues his ACL rehab. The bond between these two players is legendary—built on years of on-field magic that has turned Kelce into a household name and the Chiefs into perennial contenders.
For fans eager to see No. 87 back in action, the message is clear: Kelce isn't done yet. And if the Chiefs have their way, this reunion could be something special.
