The Kansas City Chiefs are coming off a season they'd rather forget—a disappointing 6-11 record with no playoff berth. But for Patrick Mahomes and the offense, there's a new reason for optimism: a completely revamped running back room that promises to be "electric."
Last year, the Chiefs' ground game was practically nonexistent. Kareem Hunt and Isiah Pacheco struggled to generate any positive momentum, leaving Mahomes to carry the offense on his shoulders. The result? A predictable, one-dimensional attack that defenses could easily game-plan against.
That's all changed this offseason. Kansas City made a splash by signing Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker, a dynamic playmaker who brings a new level of explosiveness to the backfield. According to ESPN's Nate Taylor, running back is the most improved position on the entire roster. "No other position could've been better enhanced," Taylor wrote, noting that Walker ranked second among all running backs last season in percentage of carries that gained 10 or more yards.
The Chiefs didn't stop there. They also added Emari Demercado and Emmett Johnson, a pair of versatile backs who can catch passes and create mismatches out of the backfield. Suddenly, Kansas City's offense has options—and that changes everything.
With Walker behind Mahomes, the Chiefs can finally lean on a consistent run game to wear down opposing defenses. But the real magic lies in the versatility: Walker's ability as a receiver, combined with Mahomes' other weapons, means defenses can't simply stack the box or drop back into coverage. They'll have to respect both threats, opening up the entire playbook.
For Mahomes, this is the support system he's been missing. A balanced attack makes the offense far less predictable and far more dangerous. Whether it's grinding out tough yards or hitting a defense with a surprise screen pass, the Chiefs now have the tools to keep opponents guessing.
Will the Kenneth Walker move pay off? Only time will tell. But one thing is clear: Kansas City's offense just got a serious upgrade, and Patrick Mahomes is set to benefit the most.
