The Crosstown Classic is back, and Chicago baseball fans couldn't be happier. The White Sox and Cubs kicked off their first matchup of the season Friday night at Rate Field, and the atmosphere was electric from the first pitch.

With picture-perfect weather setting the stage, fans from both sides of the city flooded the ballpark in full force. While it was a White Sox home game, the stands were a sea of both South Side black and North Side blue—proof that this rivalry brings out everyone. Even split loyalties were on display, with families and friend groups proudly repping both teams.

What makes this year's Crosstown Classic truly special? Both teams are playing winning baseball. The Cubs sit atop the National League Central with the second-best record in the NL, while the White Sox are just one game out of first place in the American League Central and riding a five-game winning streak. It's the first time since June 2008—18 years ago, excluding the pandemic-shortened 2020 season—that both teams have met with records above .500. That's right: not since the George W. Bush administration has this rivalry been this competitive.

Fans are feeling the energy. "It's electrifying," said White Sox fan Zane Parks. "People are excited to see both teams going at each other this year. We're all just here to have fun and root our team on." Cubs fan Mario Coix echoed the sentiment: "It's awesome for the city. It brings the family and community together. It's a great time to be out with the family and enjoy the game."

With All-Star talent on both sides, this series is shaping up to be a must-watch. As White Sox fan Bobby Parks put it, "It's going to be an electric game. You're going to see some really good players going at it today—first time in a long time." Whether you're rocking South Side or North Side gear, this is the kind of baseball that makes Chicago proud.
