The Chicago Cubs are riding high as they aim for their 11th straight win tonight against the Texas Rangers. A victory would not only extend their red-hot streak but also add another chapter to a historic season.
This current run is special. According to BCB's JohnW53, the Cubs have now had multiple double-digit winning streaks in a single season for just the fourth time since 1901. The last time they pulled off this feat was an incredible 91 years ago, back in 1935, when they rattled off streaks of 21 and 11 wins. Before that, the 1910 and 1906 teams also posted multiple 10-plus game runs. It’s rare air for this franchise.
Speed has also been a key factor. The Cubs swiped three bases in last night's game, matching a total they had only achieved twice previously this season. For context, last year's team stole at least three bases in 19 games. This newfound aggression on the basepaths is adding a dynamic element to their attack.
Through their first 39 games, the Cubs boast the best record in all of baseball. This marks only the fifth time since 1901 they've been atop the league at this point in the season. The most recent example? You guessed it: the championship 2016 season, when they held a 28-11 record. The other instances came during the powerhouse years of 1903, 1904, and 1907.
A major contributor to this success has been Seiya Suzuki. Over his last 20 games, Suzuki is slashing an impressive .329/.432/.658 with seven home runs and 17 runs scored. His hot bat is a nightmare for opposing pitchers.
With history on the line and momentum firmly in their corner, the Cubs take the field tonight at 6:05 CT. Can they keep the streak alive?
