Happy birthday to Bill North, and a whole host of other baseball legends! Today's Cubs-centric history digest is packed with memorable moments and standout performances.

Let's start with some Cubs highlights. In 1905, Luther Taylor and the Giants edged the Chicago Cubs 1-0, kicking off a streak of three straight shutouts by Giants pitchers. Fast forward to 2013, and Jeff Samardzija finally notched his first win since Opening Day, also crushing a two-run homer off Jon Garland to lead the Cubs to a 6-3 victory over the Rockies.

Today also marks some incredible feats across MLB history. In 1935, Lou Gehrig stole home in a 4-0 Yankees win over the Tigers—his 15th and final steal of home, all of which were part of double steals. A true display of speed and strategy from the Iron Horse.

In 1899, Willie Keeler, one of the game's smallest players and best bunters, surprised everyone by driving the ball past left fielder Ed Delahanty for an inside-the-park grand slam, securing an 8-5 win for Brooklyn.

Not all stories are celebratory. In 1912, Ty Cobb charged into the stands at Hilltop Park to attack a heckler, leading to a suspension from Ban Johnson. And in 1918, Walter Johnson pitched all 18 innings to defeat Lefty Williams and the White Sox 1-0—a true marathon of pitching excellence.

We also celebrate Buck O'Neil, who made his Negro League debut with the Kansas City Monarchs in 1938, and Warren Spahn, who threw a shutout in 1948 as the Braves blanked the Dodgers 1-0. In 1955, Irv Noren hit an inside-the-park grand slam for the Yankees, while Mickey Mantle went 4-for-9 on the day, raising his average to .311.

Whether you're a Cubs fan or just love baseball history, May 15 is a day full of stories that remind us why this game is so special. Gear up for the season with Cubs-inspired apparel and celebrate the legends who made it all happen!
