The Chicago Blackhawks' final homestand of the 2025-26 season began with a thud on Thursday night, as the Carolina Hurricanes stormed into the United Center for a decisive 7-2 victory. Despite a bright spot from Anton Frondell, who recorded his first career multi-goal game, the Hawks were simply outclassed by a Metropolitan Division champion squad.
Returning home after a grueling stretch of seven road games in their last eight, Head Coach Jeff Blashill had emphasized the importance of finishing strong for the fans. "We have four games at home, (so it's) making sure that we say to our fans how good this team is when we play good, how good we can be and how good we will be," he said prior to the game. The performance that followed, however, fell far short of that goal.
Carolina set the tone immediately, with Sean Walker beating Spencer Knight just 19 seconds into the contest. The Hurricanes' relentless pressure never let up, exposing the Hawks' compete level and making for a long night in net. Knight faced a barrage of shots, surrendering seven goals—his highest total since December 2022.
While the Hurricanes, playing with several AHL call-ups, showcased the work ethic that makes them a perennial contender, the Blackhawks' top line had a particularly difficult evening. Connor Bedard, Teuvo Teräväinen, and Nick Lardis were on the ice for four goals against, with Lardis failing to convert on multiple prime scoring chances.
The lone highlight for Chicago was the play of Anton Frondell, whose two goals provided a glimpse of individual promise in an otherwise collective letdown. Defenseman Louis Crevier summed up the team's frustration: "Not good enough, especially at home... We shot ourselves in the foot. It was a mix of that and they were hungrier than us on the puck."
With the loss, the Blackhawks drop to 28-37-14, having lost seven of their last eight. They now have three final chances on home ice to rebuild momentum and give their supporters a more positive send-off before looking ahead to the offseason.
