Bournemouth captain Adam Smith says "it's kind of bonkers" that the Cherries are so close to qualifying for European football this season for the first time in club history. Smith came back into the side for Saturday's win at Fulham and replaced Alex Jimenez, who has been dropped from the squad while the club investigates posts on social media. "I've been in this game a long time and it's something you can't prepare for," added Smith.

Bournemouth captain Adam Smith can't quite believe what he's witnessing. "It's kind of bonkers," he says, as the Cherries find themselves on the verge of qualifying for European football for the first time in the club's history—a feat that seemed like a distant dream just a few seasons ago.

Speaking to BBC Radio Solent, the long-serving defender couldn't hide his excitement. "It's an exciting time to be at this club, whether you're a fan, player, or staff member. To potentially be in the Champions League, Europa League, or Conference is what dreams are made of. I never thought this club would be anywhere near that. It is kind of bonkers."

Smith, who returned to the starting XI for Saturday's impressive win at Fulham, replaced Alex Jimenez—the Mexican striker who has been dropped from the squad while the club investigates his social media activity. The captain stepped in with the calm authority you'd expect from a veteran, but he admits the situation was far from routine.

"I've been in this game a long time and it's something you can't prepare for," Smith explained. "It's a tough time and I didn't expect to play, but it's under investigation. I just told the lads to concentrate on the game and they did so—credit to them for not getting distracted. I felt we all stuck together out there, and that's all we can do. Deal with it with professionalism, and we done our job."

What's fueling this remarkable rise? Smith points to the squad's depth and the club's savvy recruitment. "The players we have at this club is scary. Somehow the club finds these players, and credit to them for doing that. We've got a good group here, which means you can bring in new players and they settle really quickly."

For a club that has spent much of its history in the lower leagues, this surge toward European competition is nothing short of extraordinary. And as Smith puts it, it's the kind of story that reminds us why we love the beautiful game—because sometimes, the most bonkers dreams really do come true.
