Chelsea's ongoing battle to secure a top-six finish this season has sparked fresh uncertainty around the future of star player Joao Pedro. Despite a glimmer of hope that the Blues could leapfrog Brentford, Bournemouth, and Brighton to qualify for Europe, the reality is that their chances of securing a spot in next season's Champions League remain slim.
After six consecutive Premier League defeats, Chelsea are facing the grim prospect of another season without top-tier European football. Even a potential sixth-place finish would require a combination of their own results and favorable outcomes from other clubs. While not entirely ruled out, the club's failure to secure a spot at Europe's elite competition is becoming a growing concern for several players—and Joao Pedro could be one of the first to look for greener pastures.
With Chelsea's shaky form and a looming managerial change following the sacking of Liam Rosenior, the club faces yet another summer of transition. Joao Pedro, who was signed for £60 million from Brighton just last summer, has reportedly caught the eye of Barcelona. Former Chelsea star Shaun Wright-Phillips has even urged the Brazilian to make the move.
"I believe it would be fantastic for Joao if he were to go," Wright-Phillips told Somos Fanaticos. "Personally, given the way Chelsea has been run, if I were him, I would do everything to complete this transfer."
Wright-Phillips also stressed that a move to Barcelona could elevate Pedro's career. "Playing at Camp Nou, alongside Raphinha and Yamine Lamal, would be great for him. He would score many goals, since we have already seen what he did in a team that wasn't as good as this Chelsea team."
The former Chelsea winger added that Pedro's talent deserves to be showcased on the biggest stage. "If I were Joao Pedro, I would want to play in the Champions League, and I can't see Chelsea qualifying for any European competition. Joao has the level and deserves to be playing in the Champions League."
