The summer transfer window is heating up, and Barcelona's search for a new striker has taken a dramatic turn. After stepping back from a pursuit of Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez—deeming the deal too complicated—the Catalan giants have set their sights on Chelsea's rising star, Joao Pedro. But landing the Brazilian won't be a walk in the park.

Reports from Thursday revealed that Barcelona's Director of Football, Deco, has already opened talks for the 24-year-old forward. While Alvarez offers a different style of play, Barcelona sees Pedro as a more affordable option who can bring versatility and firepower to their attack. However, the price tag might be the biggest hurdle yet.

Catalan media initially suggested a deal could be struck for around €70 million, but Chelsea has other ideas. The Blues value Pedro much higher, reportedly setting an asking price close to €100 million. Considering Chelsea paid €63.7 million for him just last summer—and handed him a contract running until 2033—it's no surprise they're looking for a significant profit. For Chelsea, Pedro isn't just a player; he's considered one of their best assets.

One key factor that could shake things up is Champions League qualification. If Chelsea fails to secure a spot in Europe's elite competition next season, the financial pressure might force them to sell. That could also give Pedro more reason to push for a move to Barcelona, where he'd be a central figure in their rebuild.

But here's the twist: Barcelona was reportedly willing to go up to €100 million for Alvarez. Chelsea will know that, and it gives them leverage. While there's no doubt Barcelona desperately needs a number nine for next season, paying €100 million for a player with just one Champions League season under his belt and only eight caps for Brazil feels like a stretch. The question is, will Barcelona blink first, or will this deal fizzle out like so many others this summer?
