Chelsea have reportedly opened talks with Xabi Alonso as they look to fill their managerial vacancy, marking the former Real Madrid boss's first serious opportunity to return to the dugout this summer. The Basque coach has also been heavily linked with the Liverpool job, though speculation around Arne Slot's future at Anfield appears to be cooling.
Alonso's name has loomed large over Liverpool during Slot's tougher runs of results this season. The Reds had previously attempted to bring Alonso back to the club before appointing Slot, but he was holding out for the Real Madrid job at that time. Since leaving the Santiago Bernabeu, reports have suggested Liverpool would be interested in a reunion—but it seems Chelsea have now made the first move.
The Blues have been on a managerial merry-go-round this season. After dismissing Liam Rosenior last month and placing Graham MacFarlane in charge on an interim basis, Chelsea are now looking for their third manager of the campaign following Enzo Maresca's departure earlier in the year.
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Alonso has emerged as the leading contender for the Stamford Bridge hot seat, with talks already underway. The former Liverpool midfielder is reportedly keen on a return to England, and Spanish outlet Diario AS suggests he will carefully consider Chelsea's proposal. If he decides to accept, the job is his. Meanwhile, it appears Slot will remain at Liverpool next season, closing that door for now.
Chelsea aren't putting all their eggs in one basket, though. Fellow Basque manager Andoni Iraola is also in the frame after announcing he will leave Bournemouth at the end of the season. While Iraola has been linked with Crystal Palace, Jacobs has denied those claims. The Blues' shortlist also includes Filipe Luis, Oliver Glasner, and Fulham's Marco Silva, giving fans plenty to speculate about as the summer approaches.
