In a thrilling display of determination and skill, Chatham High School captured its first Morris County Tournament boys lacrosse title with a commanding 12-7 victory over Delbarton on Saturday at Drew University's Ranger Stadium. The Cougars' historic win, led by senior Shep Boyd's five-goal performance, marks a triumphant moment for public school lacrosse in Morris County.
From the opening faceoff, Chatham showcased a complete team effort that had been building since last year's heartbreaking one-goal loss to Delbarton in the 2025 final. "We've had this game circled on our calendars since it ended last year," said junior attack Nick Lagunowich. "The boys pulled through. It's an unbelievable feeling."
The turning point came late in the second quarter when Boyd tied the score at 4-4 with just over three minutes remaining before halftime. The Cougars carried that momentum into the third quarter, scoring four unanswered goals to build an 8-4 lead that Delbarton could not overcome. Junior Charlie Dunn contributed two goals and an assist, while junior midfielder Quin Grosso added a goal and two assists in the victory.
This championship represents more than just a trophy for Chatham. The Cougars are the first public school to defeat Delbarton since April 2024, and this victory erases the sting of six previous MCT final losses to the Green Wave. As Grosso shouted while celebrating with the team's oversized blue-and-white flag, "It's Cougar county, baby!"
For Boyd, who earned MCT MVP honors with five goals and two assists in the final, the win signals a shift in the county's lacrosse landscape. "The public schools are back in action," he said. "It's just awesome to bring it back. It should belong here for now."
The Cougars' balanced attack and defensive tenacity throughout the tournament prove that hard work and team chemistry can overcome even the toughest opponents. As these young athletes continue to develop their game, fans can expect more exciting moments from this talented Chatham squad in future seasons.
