In a significant move that solidifies their veteran leadership core, the Columbus Blue Jackets announced Tuesday morning they have locked in center Charlie Coyle with a six-year, $36 million contract extension. The deal keeps the 34-year-old in Columbus through the 2031-2032 season.
Coyle's journey to the Blue Jackets is a story of resilience and adaptability. Originally selected 28th overall by the San Jose Sharks in the 2010 NHL Draft, he made his NHL debut two years later—but not with San Jose. In a June 2011 blockbuster, Coyle was traded to the Minnesota Wild as part of the package that sent defenseman Brent Burns and a 2012 second-round pick to the Sharks.
As a rookie in the lockout-shortened 2012-2013 season, Coyle quickly made his mark, appearing in 37 games and tallying eight goals with six assists. Over his 14-year career, he has become a model of consistency, playing 1,032 games across stints with the Wild, Boston Bruins, Colorado Avalanche, and now the Blue Jackets. Heading into the 2026-2027 season, Coyle boasts 209 goals and 334 assists for 543 total points.
His career has been defined by key trades. After five and a half seasons in Minnesota, he was dealt to the Bruins in February 2019 for Ryan Donato and a fifth-round pick. Five years later, he moved again—this time to the Colorado Avalanche alongside a 2026 fifth-round pick, in exchange for Casey Mittelstadt, Will Zellers, and a 2025 second-round pick. After just three months in Colorado, Coyle was traded for the fourth time, landing in Columbus.
Blue Jackets President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Don Waddell praised the signing, highlighting Coyle's immediate impact. "Charlie made a tremendous impact on and off the ice for us last season and keeping him in Columbus was a priority," Waddell said. "He is the definition of a true pro—a durable, reliable, productive right-shot center whose leadership, character, and consistency are extremely valuable in this league. We are thrilled that he will continue to be a very important part of the Columbus Blue Jackets for years to come."
For fans looking to gear up like their favorite veteran, Coyle's commitment to the game and his team is a perfect reminder that the right equipment—and the right mindset—can make all the difference on the ice.
