Welcome to the show, Chuckie! The Carolina Hurricanes have officially signed former Penn State hockey center Charlie Cerrato to a three-year entry-level contract (ELC), marking a major milestone in his young career.
The deal, announced on Tuesday, carries an average annual value and cap hit of $915,000—a solid starting point for a rookie looking to make his mark in the NHL. Cerrato, affectionately known as "Chuckie" by fans and teammates, brings a gritty, two-way game that fits perfectly with Carolina's fast-paced system.
Cerrato's journey to the pros began after Penn State's early exit from the NCAA Tournament. He quickly signed an amateur tryout with the Chicago Wolves, the Hurricanes' AHL affiliate, and suited up for one playoff game—though he didn't register a point, the experience was invaluable for his development.
He's the fourth player from the Nittany Lions' 2025-26 roster to ink a professional contract, joining Matt DiMarsico, Aiden Fink, and Kevin Reidler. The contract runs through the 2027-28 season, after which Cerrato will become a restricted free agent—giving Carolina plenty of time to evaluate his growth.
Looking ahead, cracking the Hurricanes' lineup in 2026-27 won't be easy. Sebastian Aho remains one of the NHL's elite centers, captain Jordan Staal has one year left on his deal, and Carolina just extended Mark Jankowski for two more seasons. Meanwhile, Logan Stankoven has been a revelation this year, seemingly ending the team's long search for a strong second-line center. Given that depth, Cerrato will likely spend the 2026-27 season honing his skills with the Wolves, but don't count him out—his tenacity and hockey IQ could make him a valuable call-up option down the road.
