Charles Barkley isn't holding back when it comes to calling out what he sees as a major issue in professional sports. During a recent episode of NBA Tip-Off, the Hall of Famer made it clear that anyone who thinks there aren't gay athletes playing at the highest levels is simply "stupid."
The conversation started when the panel—including Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith, and Shaquille O'Neal—discussed the passing of Jason Collins, the first openly gay NBA player. Smith praised Collins as a trailblazer, noting that his courage helped pave the way for others. But Barkley quickly pushed back, arguing that despite progress, society still has a long way to go.
"We live in a homophobic society," Barkley said bluntly. "Anybody who think we ain't got a bunch of gay players in all sports, they're just stupid. There is such an animosity towards the gay community."
Johnson echoed the sentiment, honoring Collins for using his platform to encourage others to live authentically. "He said your life is so much better when you just show up as your true self," Johnson added.
This isn't the first time Barkley has spoken out against discrimination. In 2023, he voiced support for the LGBTQ+ community after backlash targeted companies like Bud Light for partnering with a transgender influencer. For Barkley, the message is simple: the numbers don't lie, and the closet doors in pro sports are still holding too many athletes back.
