NBA legend Charles Barkley didn't hold back after the Boston Celtics' 106-93 Game 6 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, calling out their strategy as the series heads to a decisive Game 7.
"They don't make any adjustments. They just are going to come out and jack up 3s," Barkley told 97.5 The Fanatic on Friday, summing up a growing frustration with Boston's one-dimensional approach.
The Celtics once held a commanding 3-1 series lead, but their offense has gone cold at the worst possible time. In Game 5, they shot just 11-for-39 from beyond the arc, and Game 6 was more of the same—12-for-41 from 3-point range. That's a combined 23-for-80 from deep over two must-win games, a recipe for disaster in the playoffs.
Barkley, who brings 16 years of NBA playing experience and 25 years as a basketball analyst, sees a clear mismatch on the sidelines. He believes Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla is being outmaneuvered by 76ers coach Nick Nurse, who has adjusted his defensive schemes to force Boston into contested perimeter shots. Without a reliable Plan B, the Celtics are gambling on hot shooting—and it's not paying off.
Even if Boston manages to survive Game 7, Barkley warns the road ahead only gets harder. Relying on the 3-pointer as a primary weapon is a high-risk strategy, especially against elite defenses that tighten up in the postseason. For a team with championship aspirations, the lack of in-game adjustments is a glaring weakness.
As the Celtics prepare for a do-or-die Game 7, the pressure is on Mazzulla to prove his team can adapt—or risk an early exit that will fuel even more criticism from legends like Barkley.
