The Los Angeles Chargers are building for the future, and it starts with draft capital. According to NFL.com's Dan Parr, the Bolts are projected to receive a third-round compensatory pick in the 2027 NFL Draft—a reward for letting key players walk in free agency.

Since taking over as general manager, Joe Hortiz has made no secret of his strategy: maximize the compensatory pick formula. This offseason, that plan took shape as several Chargers landed big-money deals elsewhere. Edge rusher Odafe Oweh, for instance, signed a massive $24 million-per-year contract with the Washington Commanders, setting the stage for a solid comp pick return.

But it wasn't all smooth sailing. The Chargers made a few signings that diluted their comp pick haul. The most head-scratching? Adding offensive guard Cole Strange at $6.5 million per year—a move that erased one of their projected picks. Strange's familiarity with Mike McDaniel's system may have helped, but many question if he's a starter-caliber player. On the flip side, tight end Charlie Kolar's $8.1 million deal was a smart, value-driven addition.

After the dust settled, the Chargers are left with just one compensatory pick—a third-rounder for Oweh. Parr explains, "The Commanders did not spend an early draft pick on an edge rusher, so I'm expecting the highly paid Oweh to play enough snaps to ensure the Bolts are awarded a third-round selection."

As it stands, the Chargers have only five draft picks in 2027. A sixth-round pick was traded for offensive lineman Trevor Penning, and a seventh-rounder was used to acquire tackle Austin Deculus (who was later cut). But don't let the low number fool you. Last year, the Chargers started with five picks before trading their way to eight selections by draft weekend. With an extra third-rounder potentially in hand, don't be surprised if history repeats itself.

For Chargers fans, this is a sign of a front office playing the long game—stockpiling assets and staying flexible. Whether that third-round pick becomes a starter or trade bait, it's clear the Bolts are thinking ahead.
