Chael Sonnen sees Sean Strickland as the only man who has a chance to dethrone Khamzat Chimaev.

Chael Sonnen has never been one to mince words, and his latest take on the UFC middleweight division is no exception. The outspoken analyst sees Sean Strickland as the last line of defense against a "Russian invasion" that has been quietly taking over the sport.

With the likes of Khabib Nurmagomedov and Islam Makhachev already holding UFC gold, and now Khamzat Chimaev reigning as middleweight champion, Sonnen believes the trend of Russian dominance is reaching a critical point. Enter Strickland, who steps into the octagon at UFC 328 on Saturday as a heavy underdog against the undefeated Chimaev (15-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC).

Speaking on "The Ariel Helwani Show," Sonnen didn't hold back. "Strickland is the last hope. He is the last line of defense between the martial arts community and having to watch Chimaev for the next period of time." He recalled warning the UFC about the rising tide of Russian talent, saying, "I was warning them it's coming. The Russians are coming... Unless you want a whole bunch of guys coming in with beards and no mustaches, taking all your belts away, the only way to stop them is don't give them the opportunity."

As a former wrestler himself, Sonnen emphasized the unique toughness of that fighting culture. "If Chimaev penetrates Sean Strickland, you better get used to the Chimaev era, because it's not going anywhere anytime soon."

For fans and fighters alike, Saturday's main event at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., carries weight far beyond just another title fight. It's a clash of styles, cultures, and—according to Sonnen—the future of the division. Strickland (30-7 MMA, 17-7 UFC) may be the underdog, but he's also the last man standing between Chimaev and total domination.
