Eight years have passed since Chad Kelly last took a snap in an NFL regular-season game, but the quarterback's dream of a return to the league remains very much alive. "That's always the goal," Kelly recently stated. "It's always a goal of quarterbacks, whatever league you're in, is to get to the top of the top... My talent speaks for itself."
Kelly's professional journey has been a winding one. After being drafted by the Denver Broncos in 2017—where his famous uncle, Hall of Famer Jim Kelly, once starred for the rival Bills—his time there and a subsequent stint with the Indianapolis Colts were short-lived. Following a year out of football, he found a new home and success in the Canadian Football League with the Toronto Argonauts.
In Canada, Kelly's on-field talent finally shone through. He helped the Argonauts win a Grey Cup as a backup in 2022 and was named the CFL's Most Outstanding Player the following season. However, his path has been marred by significant off-field setbacks, including a suspension in 2024 and a well-documented 2018 trespassing incident that contributed to his NFL exit. Kelly acknowledges past mistakes, citing counseling and a commitment to better representing himself and his team.
Now 32 and recovered from a broken leg, Kelly is set to report for CFL training camp on May 2. While he has proven he can excel on the field, his quest for an NFL comeback hinges on two factors: sustaining elite performance in Canada and consistently demonstrating that his off-field troubles are firmly in the past. For now, he continues to grind, hoping his play will eventually open that door once more.
