Nuer Gatkuoth is a man with options—and that's exactly how he likes it.
The Wake Forest edge defender has accepted an invitation to try out at the Denver Broncos' rookie minicamp, giving him a shot at earning a spot on the NFL team's 90-man offseason roster. But if that doesn't pan out, he won't be left without a helmet to wear.
Just hours after the minicamp invite went public, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League selected Gatkuoth with the fourth overall pick in the first round of the CFL draft. That means the 23-year-old pass rusher has a professional football home waiting for him north of the border, no matter what happens in Denver.
Gatkuoth (6'3", 237 pounds) has taken an unconventional path to this point. Born in Edmonton, Alberta, he played high school football in both Alberta and Toronto before moving to Atlanta. At the college level, he spent three years at Colorado State before transferring to Wake Forest in 2025. Last fall with the Demon Deacons, he recorded 21 tackles, two sacks, one interception, and one pass breakup—numbers that caught the attention of scouts on both sides of the border.
For fans of the game, it's a reminder that football opportunities aren't limited to one league. Whether Gatkuoth makes his mark in the NFL or heads to the CFL, his journey is a testament to the growing pipeline between American college football and Canadian professional football. And for those of us who love the sport, it's always exciting to see a player with multiple paths to the field—and the talent to make the most of whichever one he chooses.
