The NBA rumor mill is heating up, and the Boston Celtics are right in the middle of it all. With Giannis Antetokounmpo potentially turning down a contract extension this summer, the two-time MVP could become the biggest trade chip in the league—and the Celtics are reportedly ready to make their move.
On Monday, NBA insider Shams Charania reported that the Milwaukee Bucks plan to offer Antetokounmpo an extension, but "by all accounts," he's expected to decline. That would leave the Bucks with a ticking clock: trade him now or risk losing him for nothing when his contract expires. And that's where Boston enters the picture.
According to Celtics insider Bob Manning, the front office has genuine interest, and things could escalate quickly. "I don't know what the package is going to look like," Manning said on the "Celtics Daily" podcast. "I know we're going to do some videos later this week about Celtics trade possibilities. Obviously, the Celtics have some interest in making this happen, and this thing could speed up quickly here."
For the Celtics, the logic is compelling. President of basketball operations Brad Stevens has already emphasized the need to improve scoring at the rim—and there's no one better at attacking the paint than Antetokounmpo. But landing a superstar of his caliber won't come cheap. The price tag would almost certainly include Jaylen Brown, and according to NBA insider Jake Fischer, a third team might need to get involved to absorb Brown's contract.
"Despite the risks, I think if you're playing for championships, this is the kind of move you do," Manning added. "You know he has the drive. You know his defensive aptitude. There are so many things he brings to the table. Obviously, your shooting gets a little bit worse, but it's not like Jaylen is lighting the world up from three either. And you do need to slide a wing over to center based on where your roster is right now. You just don't have a way to upgrade at center in a straightforward fashion."
Manning drew a sharp comparison: "We saw what the Pacers just paid to acquire Ivica Zubac. Why not pay that premium for a superstar, and not just a guy who's filling that role at a high level?"
Antetokounmpo is a two-time MVP, a Defensive Player of the Year, and an NBA champion. For a Celtics team built to win now, adding a player of his magnitude could reshape the Eastern Conference power structure overnight. Whether Boston pulls the trigger remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: all eyes are on Milwaukee this summer.
