The NBA rumor mill is buzzing with speculation that the Boston Celtics could make a blockbuster move for Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo this offseason—but not everyone in Beantown is convinced it's the right play.
Celtics broadcaster and former NBA forward Brian Scalabrine recently shared a surprising take on the potential trade, which would likely center around sending Jaylen Brown to Milwaukee. While Giannis is undeniably a two-time MVP and former champion—and arguably a top-five player when healthy—Scalabrine points to a growing concern: durability.
"You gotta think about Giannis's injury history right now," Scalabrine explained on a recent episode of Yahoo Sports Daily. "When you look at that, it's not really the way the Celtics like to do things. They love guys that can shoot the three. They love guys that are available... One of the best abilities is availability, so I don't know if they'll go down that road."
At 31 years old, Antetokounmpo just wrapped up the fewest games played of his career, raising red flags about his long-term reliability. Meanwhile, Brown—who turns 30 next season—is coming off the best year of his career and fits seamlessly into Boston's system, which prioritizes three-point shooting and positional versatility.
Scalabrine believes the Celtics front office, led by Brad Stevens, may be inclined to stay the course rather than gamble on a superstar whose game doesn't perfectly align with their identity. "I think they're really happy with the way Jaylen Brown played this year," he added. "It seems like a little bit of a drastic decision for the Celtics to go all-in on the Giannis sweepstakes, throwing Jaylen Brown and a bunch of picks in there."
In a league where "shiny object syndrome" often drives trade talks, Scalabrine's take is a refreshing reminder that fit and availability can be just as valuable as raw talent. For Celtics fans holding their breath for a seismic shakeup, the message is clear: sometimes the best move is no move at all.
