In a heart-stopping encounter at Fir Park, Celtic delivered a dramatic late show to keep their title hopes alive, setting up a winner-takes-all showdown at Paradise this weekend.
The Hoops knew only a victory would keep the pressure on at the top of the Scottish Premiership, and they delivered in the most thrilling fashion imaginable—snatching a 3-2 win deep into stoppage time.
From the first whistle, Celtic looked intent on taking control. Inside five minutes, they had already carved out two promising opportunities. Arne Engels saw a 30-yard free-kick drift wide, while Alistair Johnston burst into the box and fired a dangerous ball across the six-yard box that the Motherwell defence scrambled to clear.
But it was the home side who struck first. Just 17 minutes in, Tom Sparrow's delivery into the box was cleared only as far as Elliott Watt on the edge of the area. The midfielder unleashed a thunderous strike that even a touch from goalkeeper Sinisalo couldn't keep out.
The goal ignited both Motherwell and their supporters, and for the next ten minutes, Jens Berthel Askou's men piled on the pressure with a series of forward runs and crosses that tested Celtic's resolve.
Celtic's best chance of an equaliser came in the 25th minute when Sebastian Tounekti linked up brilliantly with Benjamin Nygren and raced down the left wing. But the Tunisian's cross was overhit, and the opportunity slipped away.
Just when it seemed the half might end in frustration, Daizen Maeda produced a moment of magic. With five minutes to go until the break, the Japanese forward latched onto a pass that deflected off Motherwell's Callum Slattery—whose sliding challenge on Yang inadvertently sent the ball in Maeda's direction—and finished from a tight angle, the ball kissing the inside of the post on its way in. It was his seventh goal in five games, a remarkable run of form.
The drama didn't end there. In the final minute of the half, Motherwell goalkeeper Calum Ward clattered into Maeda after a lofted pass from Callum McGregor, leaving the forward grounded as the half-time whistle blew.
The second half saw Celtic take control. Nygren put the Hoops ahead in the 58th minute, finishing coolly after a well-worked move. But Motherwell refused to lie down, and with just five minutes of normal time remaining, Gordon pulled the home side level, setting the stage for an unforgettable finale.
Deep into stoppage time—nine minutes, to be precise—up stepped Iheanacho to score the winner, sending the travelling support into raptures and keeping Celtic's title dream alive.
The result means everything will be decided on Saturday at Celtic Park, where the Hoops face Hearts with the chance to snatch the title. After a performance like this, you wouldn't bet against them.
