CBS shared its reason to believe in the Detroit Lions in 2026.

The Detroit Lions are gearing up for what could be a defining 2026 season, and CBS has just revealed its biggest reason for optimism in Motown.

After a heart-pounding run to the NFC Championship in 2023 and earning the conference's No. 1 seed in 2024, last year's 9-8 finish felt like a gut punch. Missing the playoffs for the first time since 2022 was a bitter pill, but it lit a fire under general manager Brad Holmes. He wasted no time reshaping the roster, determined to get the Lions back in championship contention.

So, what's giving CBS hope? It's all about the Lions' defensive youth movement.

Sound familiar? Like the Cowboys, Detroit's high-octane offense couldn't mask a defense that struggled to keep pace in 2025. But this offseason, Holmes went to work. The Lions loaded up on defensive depth in free agency, then made a splash in the draft by snagging pass rusher Derrick Moore in the second round. A local product from Michigan, Moore tallied 10 sacks, two forced fumbles, and 10 tackles for loss in his final college season. Paired with defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, that duo could be a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks.

And Moore isn't the only new face. The Lions also brought in Michigan linebacker Jimmy Rolder, Arizona State cornerback Keith Abney II, Texas Tech defensive tackle Skyler Gill-Howard, and Tennessee defensive tackle Tyre West.

The free agency haul was just as impressive: defensive backs Christian Izien, Roger McCreary, and Chuck Clark; linebackers Damone Clark and Joe Bachie; defensive tackle Jay Tufele; and defensive ends D.J. Wonnum and Payton Turner. Detroit also locked in key returnees, including linebackers Trevor Nowaske and Malcolm Rodriguez, defensive backs Rock Ya-Sin and Avonte Maddox, and defensive lineman Myles Adams.

Last season, the Lions' defense ranked 22nd in points allowed (24.3 per game), 18th in total defense (331.9 yards per game), 14th against the run (114.5 yards per game), and 20th in passing defense. With this influx of young talent and veteran savvy, Detroit is betting big on a defensive revival. If this youth movement clicks, the Lions could be roaring back into the playoff picture in 2026.
