The world of basketball has lost a true giant. The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has announced the passing of Oscar Schmidt, a legend of Brazilian and global basketball, who died this Friday at the age of 68. Admitted to the Santa Ana Municipal Hospital in São Paulo after feeling unwell, the former player received medical care but did not survive.

Born in Natal in 1958, Oscar Daniel Bezerra Schmidt's journey began with Cristal in Brasília. His iconic career spanned legendary Brazilian clubs like Sírio, Palmeiras, and Flamengo, as well as successful stints in Italy and Spain, cementing his status as an international star.

Nicknamed "Holy Hand" for his otherworldly shooting touch, Oscar faced a defining career choice in 1984. Drafted by the New Jersey Nets, he famously turned down the NBA to preserve his eligibility to represent Brazil—a testament to his profound national pride.

That pride fueled his greatest triumphs. He led Brazil to an iconic gold medal at the 1987 Pan American Games, defeating the United States 120-115 on their home soil. His storied international career also included a World Championship bronze, three South American golds, and countless podium finishes, making him the heart of Brazilian basketball for a generation.

For decades, Oscar Schmidt held the title of basketball's all-time leading scorer with 49,973 points, a record only recently surpassed by LeBron James. His legacy is enshrined in the highest halls of the sport, including the FIBA Hall of Fame and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in the United States.

CBF president Samir Xaud expressed the collective sorrow of Brazilian sport, stating, "Oscar, our Holy Hand, was synonymous with patriotism, grit, and talent. He was a tireless competitor who honored Brazil’s jersey like few others." The basketball world mourns a player whose dedication and scoring prowess made him an eternal icon.
