The Cleveland Cavaliers proved that playoff basketball is about resilience, not just home-court advantage. After dropping their first five road games this postseason, the Cavs finally broke through with a gritty 117-113 overtime victory over the Detroit Pistons in Game 5 at Little Caesars Arena. The win puts Cleveland one step closer to their first Eastern Conference Finals appearance since 2018.
Trailing by as many as 15 points and still down nine with just three minutes left in regulation, the Cavaliers showed the kind of mental toughness that defines championship-caliber teams. They closed the fourth quarter on a stunning 23-10 run, forcing overtime and silencing a raucous Detroit crowd hungry for a series comeback.
"Man, we just made big plays," said Cavs head coach Kenny Atkinson, whose team had been a perfect 6-0 at home but winless on the road before this game. "We're down eight, down nine. I think that stretch right there says a lot about our progress, mental performance process, and mental toughness process."
Evan Mobley and Max Strus stepped up with clutch plays down the stretch, while veteran James Harden delivered a performance that silenced critics of his playoff track record. Harden poured in 30 points, getting to the free-throw line 14 times and converting 11. But it was his hustle on a missed free throw that summed up the night: with Cleveland up 114-111 and 24 seconds left, Harden missed his second attempt but grabbed his own rebound, forcing Cade Cunningham to foul him again.
"Felt it was a few things, a few opportunities that I missed, whether it was free throws, floaters, shots, whatever the case may be, but it's part of the game," Harden said. "But it's just having the right mindset, the right intent throughout the course of the entire game, trusting the process."
Cunningham finished with 39 points in a losing effort, but the Cavaliers' composure in the game's biggest moments proved decisive. With the series shifting back to Rocket Arena for Game 6 on Friday, Cleveland has all the momentum—and a chance to close out the series in front of their home fans.
For a team that looked lost on the road just days ago, this comeback win might be the turning point that defines their entire playoff run.
