History was made on the diamond as Pinkerton Academy's junior pitching sensation Julia Caruso etched her name into the school's record books. Facing Spaulding on May 4, Caruso delivered a masterful performance—15 strikeouts in a commanding 9-2 victory—that pushed her career total to 353 strikeouts, surpassing the previous school record of 350 set by Alexis Soulharis in 2006.
"I had a feeling something was up," Caruso admitted with a smile. The milestone didn't come as a complete surprise to the junior ace, who entered the season with 269 strikeouts and had already crossed the 300-strikeout plateau against Salem the previous month. Along the way, she also passed another Astros great, Kristie Braley (326 strikeouts).
Despite the individual achievement, Caruso remained focused on the bigger picture. "I just think it's pretty cool to get to do it with all my friends on this team," she said. "It's a great accomplishment, but I'm still focused on the now and what lies ahead. It was a pretty chill day. We had energy to start the game and get the win. It's an exciting way to hit that point in my career. Hopefully, more is coming."
With the win, the Astros improved to a perfect 9-0, sitting atop the NHIAA Division I standings. The schedule ahead is daunting, with a trip to 5-4 Winnacunnet on Wednesday followed by a highly anticipated rematch of last year's state title game against 9-1 Londonderry on Friday back in Derry. That showdown will feature a marquee pitching duel between Caruso and Lancer ace Elisabeth Kearney, who is committed to Stonehill.
"We're just excited to play some real good competition, people ready to compete at a high level, good hitters who are going to challenge me," Caruso said. "Of course, I'm always up for the challenge like that."
Caruso, a Division 1 college commit herself, made her own big decision over the offseason, selecting Penn State. Both her parents are former Nittany Lions—her mom played field hockey and her dad football—but Caruso insists that wasn't the deciding factor. "I just really fell in love with the coaching staff, the softball program and everything Penn State has to offer," she said, adding that she's fired up to pitch in the Big Ten Conference.
Meanwhile, Salem showed resilience on the same day, rallying from a 5-2 deficit in the seventh inning to win at Concord. Catcher Mikayla Morales credited the team's chemistry and drive for the comeback. "We're having a really great season. We've got two losses against two really good teams (state finalists Londonderry and Pinkerton) going into (7-1) Windham on Friday," Morales said. "We have really good energy right now. We really needed that win. Concord was ranked higher than us in the standings. What really kept us going is our drive. We love the game, and we all click really well."
