Carson Beck: Everybody has to run their own race, experience I gained is priceless

Quarterback Carson Beck got a reminder of how long he spent in college when he got to the Cardinals facility ahead of this weekend's rookie minicamp.

When Carson Beck walked into the Arizona Cardinals facility ahead of this weekend's rookie minicamp, he got an unexpected reminder of just how long his college journey lasted. The third-round pick ran into left tackle Paris Johnson—a player heading into his fourth NFL season. The two had been on the same recruiting trip to the University of Georgia together. Talk about a time warp.

Beck spent five seasons at Georgia, starting in 2023 and 2024, before transferring to Miami last year. He was then selected by the Cardinals in the third round of last month's draft. It's a winding path that could have tested any player's patience, but Beck sees it differently.

"I think everybody has to run their own race," Beck said Thursday, via the team's website. "Those three years I had of playing and starting are priceless."

That perspective is exactly what young quarterbacks need in today's NFL landscape. Beck emphasized that experience alone isn't enough—it's what you do with it that counts. "Experience is nothing if there is no application from the lessons that you've learned from the experiences," he added, signaling a mature approach to his development.

Beck now joins a quarterback room featuring Jacoby Brissett and Gardner Minshew, a depth chart that offers both mentorship and opportunity. "Even if I were to be the guy at some point, you are constantly learning, through game experience, through past experience, meetings, just talking to guys around the facility, you're trying to get breadcrumbs from each and every person," Beck explained. "There's only one guy out there... Obviously, I would love to play and perform but again, we'll see where it takes me."

The Cardinals' quarterback situation isn't as intimidating as some other NFL teams, and with a new head coach who has few ties to the past, the door is open for Beck to make his mark. If he can show upside once he steps on the field in Arizona, his patient journey through college could pay off in a big way. For now, he's focused on the race ahead—and he's ready to run it at his own pace.
