Jamie Carragher has delivered a stark assessment of Liverpool's current situation under Arne Slot, suggesting the club's dramatic decline could force a difficult decision on the manager's future.
While it's common for clubs to publicly back struggling managers, Liverpool have taken an unusually emphatic approach in supporting Slot. The club has held round-table meetings, briefed journalists on their unwavering faith, and shown no signs of searching for replacements—a level of endorsement that often speaks volumes about how bad things actually are.
The situation becomes even more intriguing with Xabi Alonso, the former Liverpool midfielder who led Bayer Leverkusen to an invincible season, now being pursued by Chelsea. Alonso's stock remains high despite a challenging stint at Real Madrid, and his connection to Liverpool adds extra weight to the conversation.
"It didn't quite work out in Madrid, but I think Madrid made a mistake getting rid of him, and it would be a coup for Chelsea," Carragher told Sky. "I think he'd love to manage Liverpool one day, but Chelsea are one of the biggest clubs out there. Once you've managed one of Liverpool's rivals, it makes it more difficult. But he has to do what's best for him right now, and I think there will be Liverpool supporters looking at that thinking he's the one we want."
The former Liverpool defender didn't hold back in his critique of Slot's tenure. "You can't deny it as a Liverpool supporter at this point. I don't even think it's 50:50 on keeping Arne Slot. People outside maybe can't understand—Liverpool won the league and now he's got them in the Champions League—but the drop off has just been so, so stark."
"There's been no improvement from day one until the end of the season in results or performances to make you think it's going to get any better. My worry with Liverpool and Arne Slot now is: are we going to get into October or November and think, well, we've got to change the manager?"
