Carolina Panthers’ Recent First-Round Pick Becomes Top Trade Candidate

The Carolina Panthers made headlines during the 2026 NFL Draft by passing on a wide receiver in the first round for the first time in three years, but that decision may have set the stage for a surprising trade involving one of their recent top picks.

Leading up to the draft, speculation ran rampant that the Panthers might target a pass-catcher at No. 19 overall for the third consecutive year. Even General Manager Dan Morgan acknowledged the possibility. However, when their turn came, Carolina opted for Georgia offensive tackle Monroe Freeling instead, signaling a shift in priorities.

But the Panthers didn't completely ignore the receiver position. They circled back in the third round, selecting Tennessee speedster Chris Brazzell with the 83rd overall pick. Brazzell is expected to see meaningful playing time as a rookie, which could create a logjam in the receiving corps—and potentially push a former first-rounder out the door.

According to The Athletic’s Joseph Person, that player could be Xavier Legette, who is now being mentioned as a "potential trade candidate" this fall. Legette, selected 32nd overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, has struggled to find consistency in his first two seasons. As a rookie, he started 13 of 16 games, hauling in 49 catches for 497 yards and four touchdowns. But his production dipped in Year 2, with 35 receptions for 363 yards and three scores over 15 appearances.

Person notes that the Panthers' decision to draft Tetairoa McMillan eighth overall in 2025 was already seen as a vote of no confidence in Legette, who has battled drops and field awareness issues. While McMillan went on to win Offensive Rookie of the Year honors, undrafted free agent Jalen Coker leapfrogged Legette on the depth chart as the team's WR2. Now, with Brazzell entering the mix, Legette's path to playing time is even more uncertain.

"If he can clean up some of the things that have slowed his development, he’ll be in the WR rotation," Person wrote. "If not, he won’t — and becomes a potential trade candidate."

Entering the third year of his four-year rookie contract—which includes a fifth-year team option—Legette is running out of time to prove he belongs. For Panthers fans and fantasy football enthusiasts alike, his situation is one to watch as the season unfolds. Whether he finds his footing in Carolina or gets dealt to a team willing to take a chance on his raw talent, Legette's next move could define his NFL future.
