The mission has long been the same for the Carolina Hurricanes in building a perennial playoff contender around a collective effort to wear down opponents with an aggressive forecheck and pressing the attack. The Hurricanes enter the Stanley Cup Playoffs as the top seed in the Eastern Conference with Game 1 at home on Saturday against Ottawa in a first-round series. It comes after they scored more regular-season goals than they had at any point since the former Hartford Whalers relocated to North Carolina before the 1997-98 season.

The Carolina Hurricanes have built their identity on a relentless, team-wide forecheck designed to grind opponents into submission. But as they enter the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs as the Eastern Conference's top seed, they're packing something new: historic offensive firepower.

Hosting the Ottawa Senators in Saturday's Game 1, the Hurricanes do so after a regular season where they scored more goals than in any campaign since the franchise relocated from Hartford in 1997. This isn't a one-line show; it's a scoring symphony. Carolina is the only NHL team this season with seven different 20-goal scorers, a franchise feat not seen since the Whalers had eight in 1986-87.

This newfound depth gives Coach Rod Brind'Amour immense confidence. "Whatever way the game goes, I feel like we can handle it," Brind'Amour said. "If it’s low-scoring and tight, I know we’re pretty good at that, too. And then clearly we’ve added some pop."

The perennial question for Carolina has been whether they possess the elite finishers needed for a deep playoff run. Past trade-deadline acquisitions like Jake Guentzel proved temporary. This summer, they made a lasting move, signing dynamic winger Nikolaj Ehlers to a six-year deal. The former Winnipeg Jet, a near point-per-game player last season, adds a new dimension of speed and skill to a core featuring Sebastian Aho (80 points), Seth Jarvis (32 goals), and Andrei Svechnikov (31 goals).

With their trademark defensive structure now complemented by legitimate scoring punch from every line, the Hurricanes are not just a tough out—they're a multifaceted threat with their eyes firmly on the ultimate prize.
