Carlos Alcaraz has pulled out of the Barcelona Open. Alcaraz, who opted to skip practice on Wednesday, made the decision after feeling discomfort in his wrist during his opening-round match against Otto Virtanen.

Carlos Alcaraz's quest for a third Barcelona Open title has been cut short. The Spanish sensation has officially withdrawn from the tournament due to a wrist injury, delivering disappointing news to fans and reshaping the draw.

The issue arose during his opening-round match against Otto Virtanen. While leading 5-4 in the first set, Alcaraz called for the physio, who taped his right wrist. After skipping practice on Wednesday and undergoing medical tests, the severity of the injury became clear.

"It’s a more serious injury than we expected," Alcaraz explained to reporters. "With great sadness, I’m leaving to start recovery as soon as possible so I can be ready for the upcoming tournaments."

This withdrawal is a significant blow to the event, where Alcaraz is a two-time champion and a major crowd favorite. His exit opens the door for others, with Lorenzo Musetti now the top seed as he searches for his first title since 2022. Tomas Machac advances by default to face Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the quarter-finals.

The timing also impacts the intense battle for the world number one ranking. By pulling out, Alcaraz will forfeit 280 ATP points, dropping his total to 12,960—now 390 points behind current leader Jannik Sinner. A title run in Barcelona would have given him a shot at reclaiming the top spot, but that opportunity is now on hold.

All eyes turn to his recovery timeline, with the Madrid Open beginning on April 21st. His participation there is now in doubt. Interestingly, Sinner's status for Madrid is also uncertain after his demanding title run at the Monte Carlo Masters, setting up a potential storyline where both stars could be absent.

For now, the focus for Alcaraz and his team shifts entirely to rehabilitation, hoping to get the young star back on court and competing for major titles as soon as possible.
