Freshman talent shined brightly in Thursday's Shenandoah District action, headlined by a powerful offensive display from Buffalo Gap softball and a clutch performance from Stuarts Draft's young soccer stars.

Elissa Caricofe was the undeniable star for the undefeated Buffalo Gap Bison (6-0, 4-0), delivering a monster performance at the plate in a 13-3 victory over Alleghany. Caricofe went 2-for-4, but her hits were massive: a double and a game-ending grand slam in the fifth inning that broke the contest wide open. She finished with a staggering six RBIs, showcasing the kind of clutch hitting that defines a winning streak.

Her heroics were part of a seven-run fifth inning that invoked the mercy rule. Bailey Tribble provided strong support from the circle, pitching a complete game and allowing only three hits, while also contributing offensively by going 2-for-3 and scoring three runs. The Bison's lineup proved deep, with Faith Showalter, Mckenzie Woods, and Emarie Smiley each collecting two hits in the commanding win.

On the baseball diamond, Riverheads (6-1, 4-1) showcased dominant pitching in a 3-0 shutout of Fort Defiance. The duo of Jackson Berkstresser and Brody Phillips combined for a masterful three-hitter. Berkstresser set the tone with three strong innings, and Phillips earned the win with four shutout frames, striking out six without issuing a walk. The Gladiators manufactured their runs smartly, capitalizing on wild pitches and productive outs to secure the district victory.

Meanwhile, the Stuarts Draft girls soccer team continued its perfect start to the season, edging Staunton 3-2 for its fourth consecutive win. The victory was fueled by a standout performance from freshman forward Kylie Gorman, who netted two crucial goals. Her classmate, midfielder Chloe Miller, sealed the hard-fought district win with a second-half goal, proving that the future—and the present—is bright for the Cougars.
