It was supposed to be just another carefree autumn afternoon. Elliot Flanery, a senior on the Harrison girls tennis team, was bouncing on her family's trampoline in 2024, laughing and enjoying the crisp air. But in a split second, everything changed. She attempted a backflip—a move she'd done dozens of times before—but missed the platform entirely. She landed hard on solid ground, shattering her ankle.
The diagnosis was brutal: torn tendons and a lesion that threatened to end her tennis career before she even had a chance to finish high school. For months, she was confined to a boot, unsure if she'd ever step on a court again. "It was just a bit annoying because I could practice, but I couldn't play because of the lesion," Flanery recalled.
But Flanery didn't just recover—she came back stronger. Now, she's undefeated with nine consecutive wins and has emerged as the team's undisputed leader. After playing No. 2 doubles in 2024, she's set the tone for the Raiders in 2026, showing what true resilience looks like.
"She works really hard, and you can tell she's been playing for a long time," said Harrison head coach Landon Waeltz. "You can tell by the way she plays and the way she carries herself. I'm not really surprised with how well she's done. The way she carries herself tells you everything."
Flanery's story is a powerful reminder that setbacks don't define athletes—their comebacks do. Whether you're chasing a state title or just trying to get back in the game, her journey proves that with determination, you can turn a career-threatening injury into a career-defining triumph. And for any athlete, that's the kind of grit worth celebrating—and dressing for.
