GLENDALE – Arizona Cardinals third-round pick Carson Beck was a polarizing pick amongst fans and experts. Already 24 years old, Beck is expected to be ready right away, as his six-year collegiate career has soured people about his development.

The Arizona Cardinals made headlines this offseason when they selected quarterback Carson Beck in the third round of the NFL Draft—a pick that quickly sparked debate among fans and analysts alike. At 24 years old, Beck is no ordinary rookie. With a six-year collegiate career under his belt, some have questioned whether he’s already reached his ceiling. But head coach Mike LaFleur isn't buying into the narrative that age equals limited potential.

Speaking ahead of minicamp, LaFleur offered an honest and refreshing take on his new signal-caller. "His demeanor, I guess you could say, but that hasn’t really stood out. I’m not shocked. He loves it. He loves just sitting there. He’s a 24-year-old adult, and he loves ball," LaFleur said. The coach emphasized that while draft position carries expectations, development doesn't follow a strict timeline. "I’m not going to sit here and lie and say, ‘Hey, the first round isn’t different than the seventh round.’ I understand that. But part of our job in this building is to say, ‘Hey, take all that away, and let’s develop at the pace that they can develop. Let’s make sure we have great urgency in the way that we coach them.’ They need to match that urgency back. Because again, the clock starts now for all these guys. No one really cares at that point. You got to put the best 53 on the roster, and the best 22 out there from a starting standpoint."

Beck’s extensive college resume—five seasons at Georgia followed by a standout year at Miami—has prepared him for the pro game in ways that younger rookies often lack. Big-school playbooks and high-pressure environments have given him a head start in learning LaFleur’s NFL system. And he wouldn't be the first older rookie to silence the doubters. Just last season, New Orleans Saints quarterback Tyler Shough stepped in at 26 years old and delivered. In nine starts, he threw for 2,256 yards with 10 touchdowns and just five interceptions, finishing strong with a 70% completion rate and 293 passing yards per game over his final four starts.

For Cardinals fans, Beck’s journey is just beginning. With LaFleur’s patient yet urgent approach to development, this seasoned rookie might be the steady hand the offense needs. Whether he’s donning a Cardinals jersey on game day or gearing up for practice, all eyes will be on how this 24-year-old turns experience into impact.
